Rupert Murdoch, Super Patriot
Via Gabriel Debenedetti at Jon Chait's TNR blog:
Murdoch insisted, investigative journalism “does lead to a more transparent society, and I believe we are a better society because of that, and we are an even more open society than the United States.”
Really, "we" are? More even than the United States? "Them"?
That statement might make you think that Rupert Murdoch's American citizenship is a scam undertaken for cynical and self-serving purposes. One might even think that he didn't take his oath of citizenship seriously. The oath where he promised to "absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen" (which would include his Australian citizenship and thereby his citizenship in the Commonwealth).
Good to know, especially when the mouthpieces of this paragon of faithfulness criticize the dedication of others to the American enterprise.
